Description: Can you imagine how difficult it would be to get around in a different country? You can help make this process easier for someone by becoming an ambassador to a newly arrived refugee family or individual. As a mentor, you help these refugees learn English, teach them about life in American and help them become familiar with the Omaha area. Assist them in meeting practical needs such as grocery shopping, going to the library, helping children with homework, and using the bus system. Contact with a refugee family or individual is set up between the mentor and client on a weekly basis. This position may include transportation if the volunteer is authorized. You offer friendly encouragement and support as they adjust to their new home and environment. By helping a new resident explore their community, volunteers build up refugee confidence, while gaining insight to the refugee experience and learning about a new culture.Requirements:Potential volunteers must pass a background screen. Volunteers must also provide a copy of their valid driver's license and proof of insurance for DMV check, if applicable. This position is looking for volunteers available weekdays, evenings, or weekends on a weekly basis and requires a 3-6 month committment. An information session will be held every first Thursday of each month to provide more information about the opportunities offered working with the Community services program and will provide time to complete application documents to become a volunteer.
